For today’s Tune, we asked Albury/Wodonga scene veterans, IDLE FRET, to fill us in on the story behind their hard rockin’ tune “The Bitter Pill”. Check it, blast it and share it:
“Recording our debut album had its fair share of obstacles. During the song writing process, I sustained a broken leg, this resulted in a 12month recovery and put a hold on recording our Album. Within this 12month period we had an unfortunate falling out with our lead guitarist and eventually parted ways with our bass player. When we got in the studio to record, we’d been working on the same songs for at least 2 years! In a way it was good – we smashed the songs out with ease in the studio because we knew our parts so well yet, the songs didn’t feel ‘new’ to us anymore.
Hayden, our singer, recorded a killer guitar riff on his phone (the main lick for ‘The Bitter Pill’) It was fresh. To hear a new riff, especially a super catchy riff like that one, generated a fuck load of excitement within the band. It was close to not even making the album because none of us had sat down in a room and physically jammed it out together! All we had was Hayden’s initial phone recording.
It was the last song we recorded for the album. Only Dan and I were in the studio, we kinda fluked a rough guide track. That night we literally wrote the lyrics, figured out the chorus then the rest of the band came in the next day and recorded their parts on the spot!
It was a fun song to work on. Dan idolises Malcom Young and I’m heavily influenced by Phil Rudd, so it was a great opportunity to channel some AC/DC. The day we recorded the song was also the day AC/DC officially announced Axl Rose would be lead singer, being big Brian Johnson fans and the way that whole situation was handled, it stirred a bit of frustration amongst us, we told Hayden to sing like an angry mother fucker.
‘The Bitter Pill’ is an old term to describe a situation that is unpleasant but must be accepted, “it was a bitter pill to swallow’. With all the support we receive, there’s still some folks who would rather amplify our failures over our achievements – that’s life, there are nasty people like that everywhere and in all walks of life. We all experience it, though I guess when you live in a country town it comes back to you a lot quicker and feels very personal, so we wrote a song about it.
The chorus says it all really “cause you’ve been talkin’ around, take a bite on the bitter pill and overdose for me” which loosely translates to “we see through your shit, please fuck off”. Everybody and anybody can relate to this song. Let off some steam, move on. That’s what rock n roll is all about.”
After 8years of rocking the border and beyond, IDLE FRET will be playing their LAST EVER show at the SS&A Club Albury, Friday October 12th with support from Wodonga Punk band POZER – DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW.
