For today’s Tune, we asked local musician, Matt Cross, to fill us in on the story behind his song “So It Goes”. Check it, blast it and share it:
“So It Goes’ was one of the first songs I wrote for ‘My Friend Rupert’. I was listening to a lot of earlier Mumford and Sons at the time, which I’m sure will be evident to the listener.
The song is track #1 from our debut EP ‘Waiting’ which will be available from all streaming services on the 23rd of December, 2018. I felt that ‘So It Goes’ was a nice way to introduce the record. It opens completely stripped back to My Friend Rupert’s roots of male and female vocals, accompanied by a simple acoustic guitar, eventually building to a full ensemble. It features a strong rhythm section of Matt Thomas and Jono Burgess, as well as lovely horn lines from Bronwynne Anderson and Mitchell Richards – all Newcastle Musicians.
When writing, the musical idea is what usually comes first, and then the lyrics will follow. The chords and melody are often what inspires me to come up with the lyrics. In this case, the message in the song is to quite simply take a strategic dive, and let fate deal with the outcome. The outcome might not always be ideal, but from my experiences its better to take the plunge.”
Catch Matt live at the Albion Hotel, Albury, Thursday Dec 20th with support from Mia Grace. $10 pre sale / $15 on the door. If you want your song featured for TUNES-DAY get in contact with us here.
